Skilled Worker Visa English Requirement Increases to B2 from Today ( 8th Jan )
From 8 January 2026, the minimum English language requirement for new Skilled Worker visa applicants has increased from CEFR B1 to CEFR B2.
This change was set out in the Statement of Changes to the Immigration Rules published in October 2025. The Home Office has now published updated guidance confirming the new requirements.
What Has Changed?
Previously, applicants could meet the English language requirement by demonstrating CEFR Level B1.
From today, first-time applicants must demonstrate CEFR Level B2. This level requires competence in all four components: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
The government says the aim is to ensure migrant workers have stronger English skills to help them integrate into the workplace and UK society.
Current English Language Requirements by Route
The Home Office has published the following English language requirements for different immigration routes:
| Route | Entry Clearance | Permission to Stay |
|---|---|---|
| Skilled Worker | B2 | B2 (except where previous permission was subject to B1) |
| Scale Up | B2 | B2 (except where previous permission was subject to B1) |
| High Potential Individual | B2 | B2 |
| Innovator Founder | B2 | B2 |
| T2 Minister of Religion | B2 | B2 |
| Student | B2 (bachelors or above) / B1 (below bachelors) | B2 (bachelors or above) / B1 (below bachelors) |
| Family visa | A1 | A1 (first application) / A2 (extension) |
| Representative of an Overseas Business | A1 | A1 |
| International Sportsperson | A1 (if applying for more than 12 months) | A1 (if applying for more than 12 months) |
| International Agreement (Temporary Work) | B1 | B1 |
| Family members of HM Armed Forces | A1 | A1 |

Who Does This Affect?
New applicants from 8 January 2026
Anyone submitting a first-time Skilled Worker visa application from today must meet the new B2 requirement. This includes people switching into the Skilled Worker route from inside the UK.
Existing Skilled Worker visa holders
If you already hold a Skilled Worker visa and met the B1 requirement when you were granted permission, you are not affected. You will remain subject to the B1 level when you extend your visa or apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR).
Employers and Sponsors
If you are a business with a sponsor licence, this change affects the workers you can sponsor from today onwards.
Prospective employees who do not meet the B2 requirement will not be eligible for a Skilled Worker visa under the new rules. You may need to factor this into your recruitment planning.
